Flow Induced Vibration (FIV)
In piping system, the turbulent energy is generated by fluid flow, hence, the process condition as well as pipe geometry has to be considered together for quantitative assessment of flow induced vibration (FIV). In most experience cases at practice, the dominant sources of flow induced turbulence are flow discontinuities in the piping system. INERTANCE can perform the related assessment including natural frequency and modal analysis to avoid the pipe vibration as per Energy Institute Guidelines.
The dominant energy is concentrated at low frequency below 100 Hz with high level of excitation. INERTANCE has provided the engineering services to estimate the low frequency vibration modes of the piping system, and has designed the arrangement of piping support system.
Kinds of FIV Study
Flow induced vibration is performed in accordance with Energy Institute Guidelines, 2nd edition, Jan. 2018 (Guidelines for the avoidance of vibration induced fatigue failure in process pipework). Study includes below kinds of estimation.
- Flow induced turbulence
- Mechanical excitation
- Pulsation from positive displacement pumps and compressors
- High frequency acoustic excitation
- Surge/Momentum changes due to valve operation
- Cavitation and Flashing
- Likelihood of failure (LOF) assessment
- Quantitative and Qualitative assessment
Pipe Vibration Study for Natural frequency & modal analysis
As results of vibration study, the addition and/or adjustment of supports can be discussed, and the detail finite element analysis for harmonic response analysis can be added, if necessary. And, the small bore connection is assessed to avoid any critical operation by cantilever vibration, which can be verified via site vibration monitoring & survey for piping system.
INERTANCE has a capability regarding noise and vibration engineering, and our experts are familiar with assessment of Flow induced vibration study as per related guidelines. For further information, contact us at (mountain@inertance.com).
